Rule of three

Wednesday 30 April 2008

There is a lot tweaking to be done to these paintings but I am enjoying a certain freedom with colour…

There was no intention to portray these as a triptych but having photographed three paintings in progress it made me reflect on the significance of threes, from the holy trinity to the rule of thirds. Statements or slogans have more impact when delivered in three simple words, and all stories or events have a beginning, middle and an end, the ABC of action, behaviour and consequence. I still like to divide my compositions horizontally by three even if the middle section is really only a merging of the other two, the space between air/sky/vapour and earth/matter/solid. Working in thirds within a square makes more relevant the basic elements of composition: tonality, weight, balance, symmetry…

Is there any significance that I have just begun reading J G Ballard’s The Drowned World? (sorry Mr Proust, as much as I love the way you describe the minutiae of things, I need to put you on hold for a while, and then perhaps remember better the things past)…

This week I…

Saturday 26 April 2008

helped decorate an elephant sculpture for an art trail…
installed a new hard drive…
smashed up an old hard drive..
stretched three more canvases…
purchased too many books and catalogues (again)…
attended a talk by Richard Deacon…
decided I like Richard Long…
received a voicemail about a booking confirmation for the O’Connors Christening do at the Regency Hotel…
didn’t bake any muffins, but learnt how to make chapatis instead…
charged my ipod for first time since January…
discovered Sicilian Nero D’avola half price at the Coop…
bought a skirt in a retro geometric print just like Barbara Brown for £2…
filled up before the fuel panic…
lost the battle against frizz…
received three separate art invites to the same private view…
sold a painting and a small collage…
purchased a ridiculously large brush from a DIY store…
photographed my new paintings in progress with my old camera…
googled ‘how to make lots of money fast’….

Next week I…

plan to finish at least one large painting…
will have to work on a series of new prints…
will have to work on my art for sale
want to find some cheap square picture frames…
hope my bantams stop brooding and lay some eggs…
must pot on the seedlings & sow basil…
will win the war against frizz…
will take time out to learn how to use my new camera…

information is good, misinformation is not….
