Jazz Green : Artist Journal

October 8th, 2009

find myself wanting to sketch something outdoors each day… grabbed a few minutes on the way to an exhibition preview… was taken by the long shadows cast across a field by nearby trees… in graphite and pencil…

[5pm... field with shadows, and trees]

sketchbook graphite pencil drawing - fields
[sketch... detail] i liked this corner best, in the mix of lines…

[sketch reduced to a mosaic in photoshop]

from loosely representational to sharp abstraction in one easy step…

curious how drawing is so different to writing, how you hold the drawing implement, the speed of drawing, the many changes in direction, from the loose, gestural scribble to clawed marks, choppy angled slices, flowing arcs or undulating contours… what’s not to like?

this interest in drawing for drawings sake is really about the interaction with open spaces, far removed from the claustrophobia of a room i call my studio… so the search must continue…
